Sigiriya - The Lion Rock 

Sigiriya, also known as the Lion Rock, is an ancient rock fortress located in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most impressive and unique historical monuments in Sri Lanka.

The Rock Fortress by King Kasyapa

The fortress was built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century AD as a palace and fortress complex. It sits atop a massive rock formation that rises over 200 meters (660 feet) above the surrounding landscape, and the site is surrounded by a series of moats, ramparts, and gardens.

The Sigiriya Lion 

One of the most striking features of Sigiriya is the massive lion statue that once guarded the entrance to the fortress. Unfortunately, only the paws of the statue remain today, but they are still an impressive sight to behold.

Sigiriya Frescoes and Mirror Wall 

The fortress itself contains a wealth of ancient ruins and structures, including the King's Palace, the Mirror Wall, and the Sigiriya Frescoes, which are a series of ancient paintings that depict beautiful women in various poses and positions.

Visitors to Sigiriya can climb to the top of the fortress using a series of staircases and walkways, and once they reach the summit, they are rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

King Kashyapa

King Kashyapa, also known as Kashyapa I, was a famous king who ruled Sri Lanka in the 5th century AD. He is remembered today as one of Sri Lanka's most fascinating and controversial figures, known for his ambitious building projects and dramatic life story.

King Kashyapa is perhaps most famous for constructing the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Sri Lanka's most iconic landmarks. The fortress was built atop a massive rock formation in central Sri Lanka and was designed to be an impenetrable stronghold for the king.

King Kashyapa's life story is also shrouded in mystery and intrigue. According to legend, he usurped the throne from his brother, King Moggallana, and fled to Sigiriya to evade his brother's wrath. He then spent years building the fortress and creating a lavish palace at its summit, complete with stunning frescoes and elaborate gardens.
