 How to make Sri Lankan fish Ambulthiyal

Ingredients:

  • 500g tuna fish, cut into chunks
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2-3 green chillies, sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1/2 cup tamarind paste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • Salt, to taste
  • Oil, for frying

Instructions:

  • In a pan, dry roast the black pepper, fennel seeds, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, coriander seeds, and fenugreek seeds until fragrant.
  • Grind the roasted spices into a fine powder.
  • In a separate pan, heat some oil and add the curry leaves, garlic, green chillies, and onion. Saute until the onions are translucent.
  • Add the tuna fish and fry for a few minutes until lightly browned.
  • Add the ground spice powder and mix well.
  • Add the tamarind paste, water, and salt. Stir to combine.
  • Cover the pan and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes until the fish is cooked through.
  • Add the coconut milk and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  • Adjust the seasoning as necessary.
  • Serve hot with rice or bread.
